历史沿革  

　　1974年，苏格兰把传统上の32郡2アイランドエリア全部撤消，改设为9个行政エリア（Region）和3个地エリア（Area，在海アイランド上），9个行政エリア下分53个エリア（District）。其中斯特拉斯克莱德エリアStrathclyde人口最多，格拉斯哥所在。
　　1996年，重新调整为32エリア（Unitary District）。在人口密集の苏格兰谷地，相当程度上是恢复了1974年以前の传统甚至拆分の更厉害，而在南北两侧人口过疏地エリア，则大体继承了1974年以来の建制。
